Abu Dhabi (dpa) – Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche has started conversations about closer partnerships in the areas of energy and investment in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. She will be meeting representatives of the two gulf states as part of her trip that will last until Wednesday. These talks will focus on cooperation in the fields of technology, energy and raw materials.

“In a world where geopolitical tension is rising, Germany has to actively shape its strategic partnerships,” the minister said in Berlin before her departure.

The debate about possible restrictions regarding LNG deliveries due to the planned EU Supply Chain Directive is also likely to be addressed in Qatar. In addition to acting as a mediator in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Qatar is among Europe’s most important gas suppliers.

Investment Officer Martin Blessing is joining the minister on her trip. The Federal Government is hoping for additional capital influx from the region, for example for energy infrastructure projects. Another topic that is to be discussed in the Emirates is the planned take over of the chemicals group Covestro by the state-owned Adnoc group. The Federal Government is still in the process of reviewing the transaction.
