Addis Abeba (dpa.de) – As part of his two-day trip to Africa, Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will be visiting Ethiopia this Thursday. Previous agenda items of the trip included talks in Kenya and a visit to a German company. In the capital city of Addis Abeba, Mr Wadephul will be meeting his Ethiopian counterpart Gedion Timothewos. Planning also provides for talks at the African Union (AU) headquarters, including with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and former Foreign Minister of Djibouti.

It is very likely that the war in Sudan that started in April 2023 will be among the key topics discussed. The United Nations considers the conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) the currently greatest humanitarian crisis worldwide.

The key goals pursued by the African Union include peace, security, development, promotion of democracy and safeguarding of human rights. These goals are set out in its Agenda 2063. The AU has the right to intervene in the event of severe transgressions such as war crimes and genocides. 54 African states and the Western Sahara territory are members of the regional organisation that was founded in 2002, aiming to advance Africa’s political and economic integration. In September 2023 the African Union became a full G20 member.
