Wadephul hoping for German seat on Gaza Board of Peace
The Board of Peace is to oversee the work of the new Palestinian transitional government.
Berlin (dpa, d.de) – Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is hoping for a German seat on the “Board of Peace” that is to oversee the transitional government in Gaza. After meeting with his Austrian counterpart Beate Meinl-Reisinger in Berlin, he said that Germany was ready to accept responsibility in this “important institution”. “We expect concrete talks to begin fairly soon now, and perhaps also an invitation.”
He said he was very keen for the second phase of the peace process brokered by the US to begin now. “This requires this Board of Peace to be established.”
US President Donald Trump had previously announced that the oversight body had been set up. Writing on the Truth Social platform, the Republic politician said that the Board of Peace had been formed and that the names of its members would soon be announced. Trump will chair the oversight council.
The members of the transitional government were recently announced - 14 Palestinians said to have no ties to the Islamist Hamas - which first met in Cairo on 16 January. Its job will be to oversee reconstruction of the destroyed Gaza Strip. The UN estimates that this will cost roughly 50 billion US dollars.
