Frankfurt/Main (dpa) - How should public spaces be designed to offer added value to society? And what role does design play in a vibrant democracy? These questions will be addressed this year in the German city of Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region. This is because the city and the region have been named World Design Capital (WDC) 2026. It is the first time the title has gone to Germany. The kick-off event is set to take place today in Darmstadt, about 30 kilometres from Frankfurt. Among those who have announced their attendance is Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein.

Based in Montréal, Canada, the World Design Organisation (WDO) has been recognising cities and regions for their effective use of design since 2008. In the race for the 2026 title, the Rhine-Main region prevailed over the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh. Previously, the title went to San Diego (USA) and Tijuana (Mexico).

The motto for the year as a whole is "Design for Democracy. Atmospheres for a better life". Around 2,000 projects and events are planned involving some 450 cooperation partners – including museums, universities, foundations, companies, initiatives, schools and associations.
