In Germany more and more food products from local surroundings are being put on the table. That, at least, is the result of a survey commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV). According to the survey, 92 per cent of Germans prefer food products from the local region. About 75 per cent of the respondents declared themselves willing to pay higher prices for these foodstuffs because, for example, this supported family businesses.

The organizers of the International Green Week 2014 are aware of these figures. When the large fair for food, agriculture and horticulture opens, it will therefore not least be about good things to eat from local surroundings. The visitor can take a culinary “Tour of Germany” through seven exhibition halls. More than 500 exhibitors will tempt him with delicacies from various regions ranging from Bavaria to the North Sea coast. Thirteen federal states will show connoisseurs what they have to offer.

But regionality pro or con, the fair does not want to lose an eye for the big picture. Changed conditions of the production of and trade in foodstuffs in a globalized world raise questions that can be answered only across borders. Thus taking place parallel to the Green Week is the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA), an international conference of future issues in the agricultural and food industry. Representatives from politics, business, science and society will exchange views at the forum organized by the BMELV on current questions of agricultural development. The meeting will also include an international summit of agricultural ministers at the Federal Foreign Office.

The International Green Week 2014 will be giving particular attention to Estonia. In accordance with the motto “Wonderfully Different”, the fair’s partner country wants to advertise its riches: water, fresh air, forest and grass. The best conditions for the production of fish, meat and milk.
