Maas: Trump and supporters trample on democracy

Berlin (dpa) - Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) has reacted with concern to the turbulent events surrounding the US Capitol in Washington. Maas wrote on Twitter on Wednesday evening: "Trump and his supporters should finally accept the decision of the American voters and stop trampling democracy underfoot."
In his opinion, enemies of democracy will rejoice at the "inconceivable images" from Washington. He wrote that seditious words lead to violent actions - on the steps of the Reichstag, and now in the Capitol. "The contempt for democratic institutions has devastating effects."
Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) tweeted: "Democracy is stronger! And more important than any individual, even if he is president!"
In the events around the US Capitol in Washington, protesters had invaded the Senate chamber of the parliament building. US President Donald Trump, in a speech about alleged fraud in the US presidential election, had called on his supporters to march to the Capitol, which houses the Senate and the House of Representatives.
In the summer, opponents of the government’s corona policy had occupied the steps of the Reichstag in Berlin, sparking widespread outrage.
