MySolution

deutschland.de spent one month presenting fascinating projects from our community that make our lives that bit better. In the #MySolution social media challenge, our followers around the globe revealed how they design their lives to be more sustainable. From all the wonderful entries, our sustainability jury picked the most creative ideas in the categories “initiatives” and “private individuals” and you voted for your favourites! Here are the winners:

Lead Foundation

Their ambitious mission is to make Africa green in a bid to cool down the planet. Together with the Justdiggit initiative, the Tanzania-based Lead Foundation is renaturing dry, unfertile soil. It is doing so mainly by reforesting in order to keep the Earth cool and damp. Using a technique called “Kisiki Hai” (“living tree stump”) in Swahili, the initiative is regenerating damaged forests with the aid of irrigation channels. The initiative relies for the most part on cooperation with local farmers. With over 145,000 water channels, the farmers in Tanzania have already succeeded in reviving 6.3 million trees, thereby renaturing 60,000 hectares of land.

Romel Bravo

Romel from Panama turns plastic into art. But not just any old art: he creates Transformer figures worthy of Hollywood. His workshop is teeming with Bumblebees, Megatrons and Optimus Primes – all made out of the rubbish that Romel finds in nature. Since the age of five, Romel has been transforming plastic waste into works of art. He hopes they will draw attention to the pollution of our rivers and coasts, while at the same time showcasing the creative and fascinating ways in which rubbish can be reused.

Laura Porras

Laura has always been interested in climate change and its impact. To protect her environment, the Colombian ensures her shopping is for the most part plastic-free, cycles to work and eats a vegan diet. She also uses water from her shower to water her plants. This is because Laura firmly believes that everything you do, no matter how small, counts in the fight against climate change.

Mia Sophie Schuth

Mia, Michael and Iris from Germany use their Instagram channel so.far_and_mo.re to inspire others to live more sustainably. Each Thursday the three upload a post about sustainability that impresses them. In line with the motto of “Simply do it yourself”, they publish simple everyday tips about things you can do yourself. These include ideas for upcycling, buying second-hand and regional products, minimalism and vegetarianism.
