Local organic produce
Local organically grown food products are a growth market.
Eating meat that comes from happy animals, saving the environment and buying sustainable products are just some of the consumer wishes that have made Germany Europe’s largest market for organic produce. The trend towards ecological food and drink resulted in a 6.6% increase in sales in 2012, taking their turnover to 7 billion euros. Organic food remains a growth market, although a niche one: the organic share of the entire food market amounts to just 3.9%.
A little more recent, but all the stronger is the consumer trend towards local food products. Four out of five Germans prefer fruit and vegetables from their own region, and even in the case of meat, sausages and dairy products the figure is more than half. Why is that important to them? In a recent study, consumers gave the following reasons: local products are fresher and buying them not only strengthens the local economy, but also benefits the environment because they do not need to be transported as far.
